About Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve

The Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve spans approximately 92,000 hectares in southwestern Saskatchewan. Characterized by expansive active sand dunes, the reserve represents the largest active dune field in Canada, formed thousands of years ago through glacial and post-glacial processes. This arid environment supports a distinct mixed-grass prairie ecosystem interspersed with dune landscapes, providing critical habitat for numerous rare and endemic plant and animal species. Unique flora such as oatgrass, prairie sandreed, and several species of cacti thrive alongside burrowing mammals, like Richardson’s ground squirrels, and bird species including the ferruginous hawk and burrowing owl, both of which benefit from conservation efforts in the area.

Historically, the dunes were shaped by ancient glacial lakes and winds during the last Ice Age. Indigenous peoples have long inhabited the region, with the dunes forming part of traditional territories. Today, the area's largely uninterrupted natural state makes it valuable for ecological research and low-impact outdoor recreation. Visitors can experience quiet hiking across rolling dunes, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and photography of the striking sandy vistas. While motorized access is limited to protect sensitive habitats, nearby trails provide access to scenic vantage points and interpretive markers.

The reserve’s remote location and fragile environment require visitors to follow leave-no-trace principles, ensuring preservation of this rare sandhill ecosystem. The Great Sandhills stands out as a remarkable natural feature within the Canadian Prairies, offering a rare glimpse into a desert-like environment so far north and presenting opportunities to observe specialized species adapted to these unique conditions.
